dlr Visual Artist Studios
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council Arts Office, with the support of the Arts Council, seeks to award two artists studio workshops for a period of 1 year, starting in November 2022. These studios are open to visual artists working in any medium however, your working methods need to be compatible with the space available.
The Council’s Arts Development Plan identifies the lack of accessible artist workspace as the key barrier to artists career progression in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. This opportunity is an action of the arts development plan which seeks to address this challenge and support the career of dlr Visual Artist for a 1-year period.
The selected Artists will each be awarded exclusive use of an artist’s studio in Dún Laoghaire Baths, and a materials budget of €6,500.
Dún Laoghaire Baths Artist Workspaces
The art practice must be suitable to the workspace provided. There are 3 individual artist workspaces ranging in size, number of windows and doors. Access to a communal area is also provided
Workshop 1, 19.6 sqm in size with 1 large window and 2 doors (1 external and 1 internal)
Workshop 2, 14.8 sqm in size with 4 windows and 1 internal door
Workshop 3, 17.8 sqm in size with 1 window and 1 internal door
Artist communal area, circa 45 sqm with 1 large window and 1 door
All individual studios are equipped with a Belfast sink, storage, lights and power sockets. A work table and chair can be provided. The floor is polished concrete, there is underfloor heating. Access to a wifi connection will be provided once the building opens.
Workshop 4 is a programmed art space measuring 42sq metres. It has large French doors, 4 windows and overhead skylights. There are 2 Belfast sinks, a bench for material preparation, tables and chairs. The floor is polished concrete, there is underfloor heating. Limited, occasional access to this space, for the presentation of workshops, talks or classes may be facilitated subject to programme schedule.
There is access to a public bathroom and tea station. A public coffee shop occupies the top floor.
While the workspace has 24hr access this is to facilitate the work schedule of awarded artists only. Artists are not permitted to live or sleep onsite overnight or invite others into the building outside its normal operating times (TBC).
Artists must agree to adhere to the Health & Safety Policy of Dún Laoghaire Baths and work with Council staff, our Facility Management Company and Coffee Shop operator to ensure the safety of artists, building staff and visitors alike.
Eligibility
Applications are invited from artists who are living in or working in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown.
This opportunity is open to individual, professional visual artists only.
Artists must be able to make good use of this valuable workspace.
What we offer:
· A materials budget of €6,500
· Solo studio space for 1 year
· Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council will cover all costs associated with providing the residency space including rent and utilities.
The selected artists will be required to have Public Liability Insurance with cover of €6.5 million with a specific indemnity to Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council. If necessary, the artist will also be required to have Employer’s Liability Insurance.
Proposals & Selection Process
Applicants may only submit one project proposal for this opportunity at the Dún Laoghaire Baths. However, other opportunities are currently available in Dún Laoghaire Baths which individual visual artists can apply for.
Applicants are required to make their application via submit.com and include
1. A typed curriculum vitae;
2. Detail your connection to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown; eligibility for this award is artists living in, working in or from the County.
3. An outline of the proposed approach to the opportunity of a 1-year funded studio space and materials budget.
4. Detail the benefit of this studio space to the progression of your practice.
5. A short description of previous work (max 150 words), if appropriate;
6. Examples of previous work (no more than 10 examples in total). Images should include the title, its dimensions, the material/medium, the date and your name. YouTube, Vimeo links etc. may also be included. Samples of written work should be limited to 10 pages. Please supply direct links to any pages/sites you wish the panel to view and a brief explanation (max 50 words) of what will be viewed. All digital supporting material should be PC/Microsoft Office compatible. Where possible all information should be compiled into a single pdf document.
7. Applications should be no larger than 10MB.
8. Please indicate that you have availability of make good use of this workspace for a 1-year period starting in March 2023.
Selection criteria
Applications will be adjudicated by a panel of Council Officers, independent artists and arts workers. The decision of the selection panel is final.
Submissions will be evaluated using the following criteria:
· Quality and feasibility of proposal for use of the workspace (35/100)
· Quality of previous work (35/100)
· Benefit of studio to your arts practice (30/100)
