Green-Schools Water Ambassador Programme
Green-Schools, in partnership with Uisce Éireann, is now running its 10th year of the water ambassador programme. This programme aims to encourage active participation on the Green-Schools water theme, to educate participants on water conservation issues and equip ambassadors with the tools to spread their knowledge to the whole school community, thus increasing awareness, and improving the use and protection of our water sources.
This year’s programme will start in October 2023 and run until April 2024. Successful candidates will first take part in an in person, interactive, training day in their region (Dublin, Cork, Navan, Athlone) between the 24th of October – 10th of November. The training will involve speakers from Green-Schools, Irish Water, Clean Coasts and past ambassadors, as well as group work, demonstrations, quizzes and games.
Water ambassadors will also be able to take part in:
- Green-Schools facilitated wellbeing workshops to help combat eco-anxiety (online 1-2pm, 16th and 18th of January)
- Clean-up of a local beach, river or lake and/or water quality testing (30th of January – 8th of February 2024)
- A second focused support and training day (27th of February – 8th of March 2024)
The Green-Schools co-ordinators and/or water ambassador support teachers will also receive simultaneous support, training and the opportunity to network with other coordinators. School and student participants will receive a water pack and water ambassadors will also be in with a chance to win prizes and trophies.
The programme is open to all secondary level years, more than one student can apply per school, they can apply as individuals or as part of a group (max. 4 students per group).
Students and coordinators will be required to complete a brief progress report in January (deadline Friday the 19th) and a short final report in April (deadline Friday the 19th) to let us know what support they may need during the programme and how they passed on their knowledge throughout the year. All students that participate in the programme will be Green-Schools Water Ambassadors however, some students will be chosen from each region as Green-Schools regional ambassador winners and will be awarded at a prestigious ceremony in May 2024 where they will receive a trophy and a prize.
NB: Please only apply if you can commit and will be supported in attending the training and support sessions! Please cross-check your school calendar (e.g. mock exam dates, work experience etc.) again the training and support session dates listed above. Please note that you will need to arrange your own transport to and from Water Ambassador events.
